The future Alden Fine Arts Library will be a hub for student study, research, collaboration, and advancement in the arts; to align with this vision, the design will modernize, integrate, brighten and “breath life” into the space, making it adaptable and accessible, while sparking curiosity and inspiration to its users, yet providing plenty of quiet contemplation areas as well. New acoustic ceiling adornments, modern LED linear recessed lighting, vertical pendant lights (which also highlight areas such as the help desk), and new desk units with integrated lighting and power outlets will modernize the space. One help and circulation desk will be centrally located and be the main hub and service point for patrons, while the staff offices will be integrated near staff conference and lounge areas, and close to the restroom and the service hub as well. Natural light will fill the space, by adding windows to all possible window walls, the stack end caps will be replaced with a semi-transparent material, which lets light through and further modernizes the space, and terrazzo flooring of different light and muted colors brightens the entire space and will help further define different areas. Adaptable and accessible small study pods, which are ADA friendly, create spaces for quiet solo study and transparent walled “rooms” help foster small group collaboration. Life is breathed into the space by incorporating living plant walls, which are natural air purifiers, while curiosity and inspiration is sparked by the rotating display of student art, displaying large format art books, and the centralized collection gallery space.
